What You Should Know
Compression sleeves and other garments are advisable to wear during exercise, air travel, travel at high altitudes, or in especially hot temperatures. Talk to your medical care provider about prescribing compression sleeves and other compression garments.
Here are a few compression sleeve tips:
-
True compression sleeves will be sold with pressure information listed.
-
Good sleeves for reducing your risk of lymphedema have a pressure of 15-20mmHg. If you are quite active and prefer more vigorous exercise, consider a sleeve with a pressure of 20-30mmHg. For patients who need it, medical care providers may prescribe sleeves with even higher pressure options.
-
A compression sleeve should be well-fitting: too tight can over-compress, too loose is not helpful.
-
Does the sleeve create a "muffin top" at your upper arm? Too tight.
-
Is the sleeve moderately challenging to put on? OK!
-
Do you require four hands to put the sleeve on? Too tight.
-
Does your hand swell when you wear it? Could be too tight. This may require an evaluation.
-
If altitude increases, pressure decreases. This means fluid can accumulate in even normal tissues! The sleeve can help: wear sleeve during air travel and two hours after.
-
Do NOT wear the sleeve at night. They are meant to be worn during the day. Special nighttime garments can be prescribed as necessary.
